Why is it so hard to stop smoking?
Many people find that it is hard to stop smoking because life doesn’t stop when you decide to quit. Stressful appointments and long waits can trigger the urge to light a cigarette. In the following story, we see how a simple trip to the office can become a psychological battle.
«Yeah, I actually did follow it…» you say dejectedly. «I really did want to quit. I was serious about it.»
«Ma’am…» the clerk prods again.
«Alright, alright! I’m going in!» The woman’s voice makes it clear she’s not a fan of being nagged. She turns to you one last time. «Anyway, I hope it all works out. Hang in there!»
She disappears through the door, leaving you alone in the hallway. You check the time; it’s late, and you’re probably the last appointment of the day. You start to wonder if you’re about to get the classic «come back tomorrow» runaround. With every passing minute, the fear that they won’t see you becomes more intense. Frustration, bitterness, and a touch of road rage—even without the road—start to bubble up. You dread having to come back another day, having to schedule a new appointment and waste another hour in a hallway just for a simple piece of paperwork. It’s infuriating. You’re practically convinced it’s going to end badly; you’re spiraling into a dark, negative headspace where everything feels like a lost cause.
The office door opens barely ten minutes after the woman went in. «Your turn,» she says as she walks out. You practically spring out of your chair like you’re on a coiled spring, but as you move toward the office, the clerk holds up a hand to stop you.
«Wait, what? You’re kidding, right?» you snap. «I’m next. I was right after her.»
«Yeah, but I’ll be right back.»
«You’ll be right back?» You have a sudden, wild urge to throttle him. The vein in your forehead is practically throbbing, and you’re trying to suffocate him with your mind. The man notices your temper flaring and tries to make an excuse.
«I just need a quick bathroom break. I’ll be back in five.» He practically runs off before you can even respond.
«Unbelievable. I’m going to lose it on this guy.»
«Honestly, you could probably plead temporary insanity in court and get away with it,» the woman says. She hasn’t left yet; she’s still hanging around to chat.
«It’s like we were saying… even when I do the treatment right, I still fail. Either someone pushes my buttons, or I get bad news, or the cravings just get so intense… I just can’t quit.»
«I get it… it’s exhausting,» she says. «But like I told you, my husband didn’t get it until his fifth try.» She pauses. «Tell me something… why did you turn down the help from the girl at the pharmacy?»
«I just wanted the meds. I wanted something to take the cravings away so I could be done with it.»
«Ah! Just like my husband! Looking for the ‘miracle pill’ that makes the urge vanish like you’d never smoked a day in your life, right?»
«Isn’t that what they’re for?»
«Sure, and I wish it were that simple. They help, but you know the deal… tobacco is a drug, and it’s a powerful one. But it’s not just the chemistry; it’s the fact that you’ve linked every single part of your daily life to it.»
«I guess…»
«Look, right now you’re ready to toss that clerk out the window. But once you cool off, think about it. Quitting is the best thing you could do—it’s one of the best things my husband ever did… aside from meeting me, of course.» She smiles. «Give it another shot. There are so many different treatments out there, and it’ll go much better if you have some advice and support. That way, it’s not just you against your old routines. Talk to your nurse, your doctor, or that pharmacist who offered to help. They’ll give you the push and the company you need on this journey.»
