«Five times? Man, talk about willpower.»

«It’s not willpower,» she corrects you. «It’s about having a goal and being consistent. If you fail, you just get back up and try again.»

«I don’t know…» you sigh. «I already had professional help and I still failed.»

«You know… I think we might be talking about the same person. Your face looks familiar; I think we’re from the same neighborhood and went to the same pharmacy. My husband, Joan, quit because of the help he got from both his nurse and that girl at the pharmacy. The description you gave fits her perfectly.»

«Maybe,» you say. «But like I said, I already tried that.»

«Let me ask you something. If you take your driver’s test and you fail, what do you do? Do you just give up on driving forever, or do you go back and take the test as many times as it takes?»

«Well, the second one, obviously. But that’s not a fair comparison.»

«Ma’am, are you coming in?» the clerk prompts.

«Hold your horses, I’m talking!» she snaps at him. «After making me wait this long, can’t you see we’re discussing something important?»

She turns back to you. «I’m telling you this because my husband used to say the same things you’re saying. But my grandson—he’s a total math whiz—did some digging. Do you know what he found out? He found that the odds of quitting smoking on any given attempt are roughly the same as the odds of passing your driver’s test on the first try. The only difference is that when it comes to a driver’s license, we understand that failing doesn’t mean you’ll never get it. But for some reason, we can’t seem to wrap our heads around that when it comes to quitting smoking.»
